niko exists to help people feel close to someone they love — without watching them. privacy isn't a feature we added; it's the reason niko is built the way it is. this page explains, in plain language, what we collect, what we never collect, and the control you have. if anything is unclear, email privacy@myniko.app and a real person will answer.
the rest of this page is the detail behind those promises.
niko is operated by The Vulcan Girl LLC, a company formed in California, United States. when this policy says "we," "us," or "niko," that's who we mean. when it says "you," we mean anyone who uses niko — whether you're the person niko watches over, or the person who watches over someone they love.
niko is a wellness presence and connectivity tool. it helps people managing chronic illness stay connected with the person who cares for them, by sending gentle nudges when motion patterns suggest a check-in might help. niko is not a medical device. it is not a substitute for calling 911 or contacting your healthcare provider.
account information you give us — kept on access-controlled servers:
movement signals — not images. here is the heart of how niko works:
check-in calls. when a check-in happens, you and your caregiver exchange live video and audio so you can see each other. these calls are never recorded and never stored. we keep only minimal session details — when a check-in happened, how long it lasted, and whether it occurred — never the video or audio itself. each call is reached through a single link that expires automatically after 15 minutes.
messages. we store the check-in and alert messages niko sends, and your responses, so the system works and so your caregiver sees your status.
basic technical data. like most websites, we receive standard technical information (such as device and browser type) needed to run the service securely.
survey data (optional). if you complete our community survey at myniko.app/survey, we store a one-way hashed version of your IP address (HMAC-SHA256 with a secret salt) solely to prevent duplicate submissions. the hash is not used to identify you, and we don't attempt to reverse it.
platform-level data we don't directly control. our database provider may log authentication events (including IP and user-agent) in its internal security audit logs, and our hosting provider logs request IPs at the network edge — both as standard operations, under their own policies. we don't use these for marketing or profiling.
this is the promise niko is built on. you can pause monitoring at any time. when you step away, your caregiver simply sees that you've stepped away. niko is not a baby monitor, and you are never watched without choosing to be seen.
we do not use your information for advertising. we do not sell your information to third parties. ever.
we do not currently claim peer-to-peer or end-to-end encryption, because those aren't enabled today. if we turn on end-to-end encryption in the future, we'll update this page to say so.
we do not sell or share mobile or personal data with third parties, affiliates, or partners for marketing or promotional purposes. we only share data with third parties when it is strictly necessary to deliver our service, and only under binding agreements that ensure confidentiality. under no circumstances will mobile data be shared or sold for advertising or promotional use.
niko relies on a small number of trusted providers. each handles only what's needed for its job, under a data-processing agreement:
we'll keep this list current. if you'd like the most up-to-date version, email privacy@myniko.app. we do not share your information with advertisers, data brokers, or any other third parties not listed above.
niko sends check-in and wellness messages by SMS (and, where applicable, WhatsApp). you provide your phone number and actively opt in — by checking an unchecked consent box — before we ever message you. messages identify themselves as being from niko and contain a link to start a video check-in.
message frequency varies with activity, typically a handful of messages per day. message and data rates may apply. you can reply STOP at any time to unsubscribe, or reply HELP for help. consenting to messages is not a condition of anything other than receiving the check-in texts that make niko work.
if you are in California, the California Consumer Privacy Act gives you the right to know what personal information we hold, to request its deletion, to correct it, and not to be discriminated against for exercising these rights. niko does not sell or share your personal information as those terms are defined under California law. to exercise any right, email privacy@myniko.app — we won't treat you differently for asking.
the derived motion signal is kept in a rolling window — older signals are continually refreshed and replaced as your room and rhythm change; it is not a permanent record. account information is kept while your account is active. everything is deleted when you delete your account. we keep minimal check-in session details (times, durations) for as long as needed to operate the service. you may request deletion at any time by emailing privacy@myniko.app.
no system is completely secure. we encourage you to use a unique email address for your niko account.
niko is intended for adults who are 18 years of age or older. we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. if you believe a minor has created an account, email privacy@myniko.app and we'll delete it promptly.
niko is a wellness and connectivity tool. it is not a medical device, does not provide medical advice, and is not a substitute for professional care or emergency services. the motion patterns and nudges are for general wellness awareness only and should not be used for medical decision-making. in any emergency, always call 911.
if we change how niko handles your information, we'll update this page and the date at the top. if the change is significant, we'll do our best to let you know directly.
i built niko because i'm a patient and an engineer, and after my own infusions i wanted the people i love to feel i was okay — without me having to be watched. i couldn't find anything that respected that, so i made it. the privacy choices on this page aren't legal boilerplate to me. they're the reason niko exists.
